The club meets at the Millennium Memorial Hall every second Wednesday of the month at 14:30, unless there is a coach trip organised. Accent percussion is a not for profit community interest group.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, you’ll be very welcome. All we ask, if you’re under 16 please bring an adult along (they can watch if they don’t want to join in!)

Adderbury Ensemble
King’s Sutton resident, professional violinist and viola player Chris Windass, was a founding member in 1986 of the acclaimed Adderbury Ensemble, a flexible group of players performing string quartets and expanding on occasion up to the size of a symphony orchestra. The Adderbury Ensemble has an increasingly busy schedule of concerts and recording both in UK and Europe. (In the summer months, the group performs at an annual series of evening concerts at Wren’s beautiful Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford.)
Besides performing himself, Chris also works as an impresario, having started the famous Music in Adderbury concert series in 1987. Most performances take place in the glorious setting of Adderbury Parish Church, a stunning venue that has played host to many of the UK’s most brilliant musicians and chamber ensembles over the years.
Among the world famous groups Chris has introduced to Adderbury audiences are the Guildhall String Ensemble, the Medici String Quartet, the Brodsky String Quartet, the Brindisi String Quartet, the Lyric String Quartet, the Rogeri Trio, the Praga Ensemble, the Schubert Ensemble of London, the Kreisler String Orchestra, and many more. Top soloists performing at Adderbury have included Christopher Warren-Green, Robert Cohen, Bradley Creswick, Andrew Manze, Nigel North, Emily Beynon, Jane Atkins, Sian Edwards, Jonathan Kelly, Carolyn Sampson and Andrew Haveron.
Biographical Note
Chris Windass studied Violin and Viola at Birmingham Conservatoire under Ernest Element, John White and Peter Thomas. While at Birmingham, Chris became a member of the string quartet in residence at the college sponsored by BRMB Radio and gave numerous concerts throughout the country playing in many major festivals. He continued his studies privately with Emmanuel Hurwitz, David Takeno and Manoug Parikian. Chris leads a busy career both as a orchestral player and chamber musician appearing with groups ranging from the Medici and Brodsky string quartets to the Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra. Chris has always had a passion for chamber music which led him to establish the now famous Oxford Coffee Concert series in the Holywell Music Room on Sunday mornings as well as Music in Adderbury.

Adderbury Village Morris Men
Adderbury Village Morris Men regularly step out at the annual Day of Dance and at various other events in the area. They have toured abroad, have appeared on stage at the Cropredy Festival, and are featured in the film “Way of the Morris”. Anyone interested in having a go at this traditional rural activity should contact John Ekers on 01869 811741.
About Adderbury Village Morris Men
In the nineteenth century, many villages in Oxfordshire had their own team of morris men. The tradition seems to have been particularly strong in Adderbury. During the middle part of the century there were at least three separate teams active in the village. By the end of the nineteeth century, there was a general decline in the tradition and it died out in most places including Adderbury. However in the years prior to the outbreak of World War I the tradition was revived in the village and boys from the village school were taught the dances and formed a team that danced at many village functions in the years leading up to the outbreak of the war.
Most of the team seemed to have enlisted in the army. Sadly, only one returned in 1918, and the tradition again died out. Sixty years passed before it was revived again in 1975 and since then, Adderbury has again had a flourishing morris tradition. The modern dancers are indebted to local resident Janet Blunt and folklorist Cecil Sharp who wrote down the dances and tunes from retired dancers at the beginning of the twentieth century. Charlie Coleman, who came back from World War I, also passed on details of the tradition to a local man, Bryan Sheppard, who had the idea of reviving the tradition in 1975.
The Adderbury Village Men contain many of the original dancers who helped revive the side in 1974 and reconstructed and practised the dances before their first Day of Dance in April 1975. The annual Day of Dance is now established as a major part of the village year and crowds come from all over the country to watch the dancing. However, although they have been joined by new members over the years, the original dancers are now in their 60s and need an influx from the younger generation if the tradition is to survive.

Cricket Club
After years of steady decline, King’s Sutton Cricket Club is now moving in the right direction again, headed by new chairman Robert Sharpe and a completely new committee. The club has now re-entered the South Northants Cricket League, which will see us playing much more local cricket.
We have attracted two new sponsors for the 2013 season in the form of global real estate services provider Savills and King’s Sutton-based Dave Essex Carpentry. The Three Tuns pub is carrying on its association with the club and Cherwell Valley Silos continues to supply the match balls. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to these generous sponsors and also thank our vice-presidents – T Nicholas, M Wedderburn, P Hoare, D Blunt and M Smith – for maintaining their backing for the club throughout the season.
The team continues to be captained by Dan Smith, and he and his players would love to see you at the Playing Fields to show them your support for home games. (Of course, we’d love to see you at away games as well!) If you time your arrival at the Playing Fields right, you’ll get a cup of tea to see you through the game. Fabula Arts Community Choir
Fabula Arts Community Choir will be starting again in September 2023. We rehearse in King’s Sutton Church Hall (OX17 3RJ) between 6.15 -7.15pm, its great fun, we learn all sorts of music and no matter how you feel before, you always feel better afterwards (and its only £4 a week!)

Film Society
King’s Sutton Film Society screens films during the autumn/winter months at the Millennium Memorial Hall. The society offers the opportunity to meet up with like-minded people in the village, have a cup of coffee (or tea) and a chat before watching a great film (chosen by the audience) and all without having to leave King’s Sutton – what a great way to spend an evening!
Life membership of the society is offered for a “one-off” cost of £10.00, with a reduced entrance fee of £4.00 (usually £6.00) for each screening.
Screenings normally start promptly at 20:00 with tea and coffee available from 19:30. (Times may vary depending on the length of the film so please check this website’s Events Diary before setting out.)

Meetings take place in the Millennium Memorial Hall on the last Wednesday of each month starting at 19:30. We’re always happy to welcome new members and visitors to enjoy our regular talks, demonstrations and garden visits. We also have plant sales, garden visits, arrange the annual village show and do Guerilla Gardening around the village.

The Hall Coffee Shop is open to all every Monday and Friday morning between 10:00 and 12:30 at the Millennium Memorial Hall. A great place to make new friends if you are new to the village and a great place to catch up with old friends if you’re not. On Friday mornings, we usually get a visit from our local police officers, the vicar, various parish councillors and the King’s Sutton Walkers as well as all the regulars. Our local MP Andrea Leadsom also visits on occasion. Feel free to come along and enjoy as much coffee as you want (with biscuits). Just £1 buys a bottomless pot.

King’s Quilters
We are a very friendly, mixed-age-and-ability group who meet in the Millennium Memorial Hall every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at the following times:
- Winter months: 13:30-15:30
- Summer months: 14:00-16:00
Members are welcome to arrive 5-10 minutes early to help put up the tables and chairs.
Some members like to knit, others cross stitch, while the majority do patchwork. The group is non-tutorial but we all help each other and occasionally hold workshops.
Weekly subscription is £2.00, paid only if you attend and payable on arrival. The subscription covers the hire of the hall, tea, coffee, biscuits, etc. A register is taken mainly for fire purposes and we also have a tea rota: two people usually make the tea and coffee and then wash up afterwards. That works out about every 8 or 9 weeks for each person’s turn. All members are entitled to a 10% discount loyalty card from GTS Sewing Machines in Queensway, Banbury.
The group owns most equipment needed for patchwork and quilting and has a very large library of books and magazines, which may be borrowed.
We have decided recently to restrict new membership mainly to residents of King’s Sutton or people who have connections to the village.
All members may come as often or as little as they like.

King’s Sutton Lawn Tennis Club
King’s Sutton Tennis Club is a friendly club, encouraging all ages and abilities to come and play tennis. Set on the outskirts of the village in open countryside, the club offers a chance to play tennis both competitively and socially. We have four well maintained, all weather tennis courts with play throughout the year. We also have the unique opportunity to play grass court tennis on Thursday evenings during the summer months.
There is a club night on Tuesdays from 18:00 and at weekends and we are always looking to welcome new members. King’s Sutton Sequence Dance Club
The Club is run by its members and dances are held every Thursday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm with a break at 3pm for tea and cake/ biscuits and a friendly chat.
Club members enjoy a type of ballroom dancing in which couples dance around the floor in a fixed sequence of steps – all performing the same steps and movements simultaneously, starting and stopping at the same time, to recorded music and sometimes to local music duos. Dances include the Mayfair Quickstep, the Cindy Swing and the Catherine Waltz.
Special events are held during the year such as the Christmas/Summer Buffets, Fish and Chip lunches and Celebration Teas.

Literary Group
A reading group that has been in existence for some years, the King’s Sutton Literary Group has about 20 members and meets in the autumn and spring – a total of 10 meetings per year, usually culminating in a Shakespeare play followed by a visit to Stratford.
Meetings take place on alternate Thursday afternoons in the Church Room, from October to December, then January to March. We read a variety of material including poetry and plays… but not chick lit!

Martial Arts – Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu
Who We Are
Midlands Koryukan is an official Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu club under the direct guidance and leadership of Patrick McCarthy Hanshi, 9th Dan, a genuine pioneer in the study of Karate-jutsu. Hanshi McCarthy has revolutionised the way Karate is taught, emphasising kata application practices and two-person drills to enable real learning to happen in an enjoyable environment.
The instructors at Midlands Koryukan are fully qualified, CRB checked and experienced in martial arts, fitness and dealing with real-world conflicts. We are also accredited through the British Combat Association, which means you can rest assured that we’re a genuine, high quality martial arts club dedicated to teaching and passing on skills as they were originally intended. We do not seek to preserve the ashes of the Karate masters of old, but rather, we seek to keep their flame alive.

Poor’s Allotment Charity
The Poor’s Allotment Charity is a permanently endowed charity operating under the terms of a Charity Commission Scheme dated June 7, 1961. The Scheme calls for seven trustees – two nominated by the Parish Council of King’s Sutton and one by Newbottle Parish Council, each for a term of four years with an additional four co-opted, each for a term of five years. Mr Selwyn Charles-Jones was elected Chairman and Mr Bob Burrell appointed Clerk in June 2011.
The Charity was established in 1772 following the Enclosure Acts to provide fuel for the poor of the ancient ecclesiastical parish of King’s Sutton (which includes a part of Charlton), in lieu of the right to cut gorse for use as fuel and also to make a grant to King’s Sutton Parish Church of SS Peter and Paul. In modern times this takes the form of an annual gift of coal made to the household of State Retirement Pensioners.
The 1772 grant of land at Purston was sold in 1990 and the proceeds are now held in the Charities Official Investment Fund (COIF) Fixed Interest Shares, COIF Income Shares, the COIF Deposit Account and a current account with the Yorkshire Bank, Banbury. The object is to achieve capital growth in the long term and maintain a reasonable annual income. This ancient charity continues to meet its obligation to the entitled residents of the parish and the Parish Church.
A distribution of 100kg (two bags) of coal was made to 34 qualifying households (31 in King’s Sutton and three in Charlton) in August 2016 at a cost £833.00.
In accordance with ancient custom, the Parochial Church Council received £77.50 (representing 7.56% of the charity’s annual income) for the “use or towards the repairs of the Parish Church”.
With the agreement of the Charity Commission, the trustees meet at least once a year and last met in June 2017 to discuss the next distribution of coal.
Red Diamond Academy – Muay Thai
Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing, is a combat sport from Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline is known as “the art of eight limbs” because it is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. The sport requires good physical preparation to make full-contact fighting efficient.
Red Diamond Academy is the home of Muay Thai in Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties, and has a reputation for producing some of the best fight talent seen in the UK. We hold weekly classes for adults and juniors at King’s Sutton Millennium Memorial Hall (map) to which everyone is welcome, regardless of whether they’re total novices or professional fighters:

Benefits Of Muay Thai
Unlike some martial art disciplines, Muay Thai encourages freedom of thought and flow. Juniors are encouraged to think about what is happening in each situation, and what the appropriate defence and counter should be.
We take safety extremely seriously and whilst light sparring is an essential factor in learning Muay Thai, we always enforce a strict no head/face contact rule for all under 14s. The idea of sparring is not to fight full power, but to use controlled, lower power movements to hone skills. Full padding (including body shields) is available.
Once the basics are mastered, children learn to programme their actions and, during each class, we drill and practice new skills. By enabling practitioners to master automatic reaction, Muay Thai becomes a powerful ally should it ever be needed in a self-defence situation.

Middleton Cheney & District Royal British Legion – branch number 3729, registered charity number 219279 – was founded in June 2018 in the village’s parish office. The branch forms part of the legion’s South East Midlands area and incorporates the following villages and hamlets:

Taoist Tai Chi
Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese art thought to have been developed by the Taoist monk Zhang Sanfeng in the 12th century, has evolved over the years into a highly effective means of combatting stress and anxiety. The comparatively easy turning and stretching in each of the movements can also have positive effects on balance control, fitness, strength and flexibility. Tai Chi is often referred to as a form of “meditation in motion” that promotes serenity and inner peace.
Regular twice-weekly Taoist Tai Chi sessions are held at the Millennium Memorial Hall organised by experienced local volunteer instructors:

Women’s Institute (WI)
The women’s institute (WI) was established shortly before First World War, “to enable women to enjoy different aspects of rural life, including arts, crafts and sciences, and advance their education in culture and crafts.” The WI WI is now the biggest voluntary national organisation for women.
Apart from a break during the 1950s, King’s Sutton WI has been in existence since early in the 20th Century. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month (except August) in the Small Hall of the King’s Sutton Millennium Memorial Hall. These formal meetings involve listening to guest speakers, taking part in activities and socialising! Outside of meetings, we have regular outings to gardens, places of interest, and to workshops at WI House in Northampton and at Denman College, the WI college near Abingdon.
